SiLution – Reactive Silica Treatment for Waterbodies
SiLution™ is a slow-release reactive silica treatment developed for use in ponds, dams and other managed waterbodies where silica availability may constrain diatom-associated biological processes.
SiLution is supplied as a moist paste containing amorphous silica. As the material interacts with water, reactive silica progressively becomes available to the aquatic system, helping maintain silica availability for biological utilisation.
Why Reactive Silica Matters
Diatoms require silica to form their characteristic cell walls. In some aquatic systems, reactive silica can become depleted while nitrogen and phosphorus remain readily available, potentially constraining diatom growth and associated biological processes.
SiLution provides an additional silica source that can be used alongside Diatomix™ where reactive silica availability needs to be maintained or increased. Diatomix provides selected micronutrients, while SiLution addresses the silica component of the treatment programme.
Where both reactive silica and micronutrients need to be supplied together, Diatomix IV™ provides these components in an integrated formulation.
How SiLution is Used
As a general starting application, we recommend approximately 400 g of SiLution per 10,000 litres of water.
SiLution can be distributed at several locations around the waterbody to increase contact with the water. A portion can also be placed on a submerged flat surface or rock where its gradual dispersion can be observed.
Treatment requirements will vary according to waterbody volume, existing reactive silica concentration, biological demand and other water-quality conditions.
Where reactive silica is being monitored, treatment can be adjusted according to measured concentrations rather than relying solely on a fixed application rate.
Monitoring Reactive Silica
For managed treatment programmes, measuring reactive silica provides a useful way of determining whether additional SiLution is required.
A working reactive silica range of approximately 3–10 mg/L may be used as a treatment guide, although the appropriate concentration will depend on the characteristics of the individual waterbody and the objectives of the treatment programme.

Storage and Handling
Store SiLution at room temperature with the container securely closed to prevent the product from drying.
SiLution should be maintained as a moist paste. If the material begins to dry or becomes light grey or powdery, water can be added to restore its wet paste consistency.
